Bodymapping The World

“The body is the last piece of information to go digital. Most of your life is already digital - your friends, your music, your bank account - all accessible on-line, but your body is not.

At the turn of the century emergence of 3D body scanners made it possible to map the population for the first time.

Sizing Surveys

Previously sizing Surveys of the population were conducted in the 1950’s, consisting of only 8 manual measurements. In 2000 Bodymetrics carried out the first survey in the world to use bodymapping technology (automatically extract measurements).

Bodymetrics grew out of research at University College London (UCL) where 11,000 women and men were body-mapped in collaboration with UK Government, a consortium of 17 major UK retailers and leading academics institutions. Results were announced in 2004.

60% of UK shoppers had difficulty finding clothes that fit. Average female waist size had increased by 16.5 cm. Data was used to update their size charts, improve garment fit and maximise the percentage of their customers that can fit their clothes.
